The French Institute for Research in Africa is
a regional research institute working in Eastern Africa, under the
auspices of the
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It offers a research platform
run by a team of about
ten persons, whose role is to support work and exchange of information
in social sciences and humanities. IFRA therefore contributes in
promoting various scientific and scholarly works in East Africa
(Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) by favouring a multi-disciplinary approach.
The institute works in partnership
with different European and African research institutes and universities.
In Nairobi, it collaborates more specifically with the Research
Institute for Development (IRD) by hosting two researchers working
on a common research programme, as well as with the
British Institute in Eastern Africa.
Currently IFRA coordinates several research programmes
on the following themes:
Building identities and culture in Eastern Africa
Environment and management of natural resources
Urban studies
Youth, education, identity and formation of elites
Politics, democratic processes and civil society.
IFRA also aims at supporting social sciences training,
giving access to documentary resources as well as organizing scientific
events.
As a platform for promoting exchange in the humanities and social
sciences, IFRA would appreciate all individual contributions. Do
not hesitate to send us suggestions and proposals, on any topic
you feel competent in. contact@ifra-nairobi.net
